Home Insulation for Existing Homes

Insulation one of the most sought after home improvement solutions today. The practice saves considerably, on energy consumption. Insulation controls the heat gain or loss by restricting the flow of heat in the house; it is therefore, quite similar to weatherization in this respect. However, unlike the former, insulation prevents heat flow by conduction and not convection.

By restricting the heat flow, insulation helps retain the heating or the cooling effect of the electrical devices intact. Otherwise, in order to maintain the conditioned temperature a substantial amount of energy is consumed. Insulation therefore helps in cutting down considerably on electricity bills.

Due to such benefits this home improvement solution has many takers today. The ideal time to integrate insulation in the house seems to be while erecting it. However, insulation can very well be installed in an existing structure as well. This form of insulation is known as Retrofit insulation.

However, the users need to choose from a select group of insulating materials and their forms when employing retrofit insulation. Loose fill cellulose or spray foam seems to be the product of choice. The obvious reason for the preference being that this material can easily penetrate into the gaps and the crevices that are a potent source of heat exchange. Moreover, since the insulation material is sprayed, it effectively covers any gaps or crevices and provides optimum shielding for restricting the heat flow, without disturbing the structure in any manner.

Insulation, however, can be both thermal and acoustical. Acoustical insulation refers to insulating the house with sound proof material. This keeps any unwanted noise and other such disturbances from getting in. Acoustical insulation is especially useful to people living in a place that has a lot of traffic noise. Acoustical insulation prevents any unwanted noises from coming in thereby making the house more peaceful & comfortable.

An insulation solution that provides for both thermal and acoustical insulation is a vinyl window. It contains PVC as the principal material that makes it durable and resistant to corrosion. Since PVC is a cheap material, the vinyl windows automatically fall into a reasonable price range.

The two panes present in vinyl windows have vacuum in between. Therefore, they restrict any sound or air to travel through it. The other advantage that the Vinyl windows enjoy is that they can easily be molded to fit into the requirements of the buyer. Moreover, they are easy to install and maintain as well.
